Frequently Asked Questions

How long until my first harvest? If you aim at running a 100L bioreactor (a good working volume), expect your first harvest in 4-5 weeks, with regular harvests every 3-5 days after that. The culture grows faster in warmer conditions (27–35°C is ideal).

Do I need a tank or any extra equipment? You start growing in any clean glass or plastic container (a 2-litre jar works perfectly) and as your culture grows, you increase the size of your container to the desired volume. 100L is a good sized working volume. An aquarium is perfect to use as a bioreactor. The only other essential equipment is an aquarium air pump and some silicone tubing.

How long will the nutrient last? The 1kg of Fast Grow starter nutrient gets you up to a 50 litre culture volume — The post-harvest mix is enough to grow approximately 3.5 kg of fresh spirulina.

Is the culture safe to travel in the mail? Yes. We use express shipping across Australia – it always gets there without your culture dying. If your culture arrives compromised, we replace it free of charge.
